Circular Skincare: What is Upcycling?

Natural, sustainable, scientific skincare is on the rise, with efforts to make traceable, circular beauty an everyday practice. One of the most proactive ways to do this is through the introduction of upcycled ingredients.

What is Upcycling?

Upcycling refers to the process of transforming by-products or discarded objects into new products. Food waste is the main source of upcycled material used within beauty and skincare products, as it often contains food-grade ingredients rich in active technology beneficial to the skin.

Approximately 1.3 billion tonnes of food is wasted each year, due to aesthetic measures and limited shelf life- though this represents valuable materials and actives that can be crafted into products at the height of luxury.

Reincorporating materials with precious active technology allows our cutting-edge scientific skincare to be truly sustainable, helping get more usage out of natural ingredients. AMRA are committed to pushing boundaries within sustainability, and consistently use ground-breaking scientific discovery to do so.

How Can I Use Upcycled Ingredients?

AMRA have fused the science of skincare with sustainability, incorporating upcycled active ingredients into our luxurious collections. AMRA believe that for products to be truly exceptional for people, they must also be exceptional for our planet, produced with no environmental impact.

For example, embedded within the AMRA Diamond Illuminating Collection is Blueberry NECTA®, a powerful active for Blue Light Defence that has been sourced from upcycled blueberries, harvested with meticulous precision to ensure we provide incredible results whilst giving back to the environment.

The oil sourced from blueberry seeds contains a high omega fatty acid formulation, providing a natural protection from free radical damage, including modern day pollution such as blue light.

The blueberries that make Blueberry NECTA® are a by-product of the juice production industry. AMRA uses oil extracted from seeds of the waste pulp and upcycles this active technology into a luxurious oil.

Discover this innovative, sustainable technology in the AMRA Diamond Illuminating Moisturiser. Blueberry NECTA® fuses with Vitamin A, a retinoid, to encourage collagen production as well as cell renewal to smooth and tone the skin, minimising texture and pigmentation for a healthy, youthful complexion. A DEJ active targets the skins architecture, strengthening from within to provide a healthy, illuminated complexion.
