International Women’s Day
Today is International Women’s Day, a day when we celebrate female empowerment, achievement, and equality. It happens each year on 8th March and aims to celebrate the social, cultural, and political achievements of women. It also marks a call to action for accelerating women’s equality.
This awareness day can be traced back to the early 1900’s, at a time when women didn’t have the same rights as men and gender equality was a distant dream. According to the World Economic Forum “gender parity will not be attained for almost a century”, so it is important that people continue to raise awareness and growth.
This year’s theme for International Women’s Day is #ChooseToChallenge, where women across the world are being encouraged to strike the Choose to Challenge pose and post on social media to raise awareness of International Women’s Day and the challenges that women face across the world every day.
Whether it is gender bias, inequality, or a lack of recognition of everything that women do, International Women’s Day is a time to acknowledge, highlight and raise awareness of the women who strive to make a difference for all of us.
AMRA and International Women’s Day
As a brand created and run by women, we believe in celebrating the achievements and drive of women – in business, life, and education - every day. We want women across the world to feel confident, empowered, and comfortable in their own skin.
AMRA started life in 2002, when founder Sue Jones combined her knowledge, experience and passions of business and cosmetology. As a life sciences graduate, university lecturer and researcher she was well-placed to develop a skincare range that brought luxury, precious ingredients and science together.
Sue undertook projects exploring Fair Trade to understand more about the impact of ingredients on the ecosystem. Women across the world play a crucial role in Fair Trade, within manufacture, distribution and “getting things done”. The experience Sue had with Fair Trade allowed her to build the foundations and values of AMRA as a brand.
Sue and her female team have continued to develop and grow AMRA, collaborating with other global brands and artists to empower, rejuvenate and inspire others across the world.
At AMRA, we recognise that in the long list of people, projects, and activities that women support, they often put themselves at the bottom. It’s time for women to take care of their own wellbeing as a priority rather than a possible eventuality. This is one of the reasons why we launched our very first AMRA Wellbeing programme in 2020.
Celebrating International Women’s Day
So here’s to the strong, relentless women across the world who strive to make a difference, challenge the status quo and seize every opportunity that comes their way.
Here’s to supporting each other, raising one another up instead of tearing each other down and giving women in every industry, country and situation a boost to keep on striving for change. We’ve come a long way, but there’s still much further to go.
