Retinol vs Bakuchiol

Retinol is currently one of the most well-known active ingredients within modern skincare. Derived from Vitamin A, this group of compounds make for the ultimate ingredient to combat signs of aging, promoting the skins natural renewal process. Due to this, Retinol is primarily used to treat congested and damaged skin, as well as mature skin.

Retinol is unique from other anti-aging ingredients, as they tend to work through the removal of dead skin cells. Instead, retinol penetrates deep into the skin beneath the epidermis to work at an intracellular level.

Once in the dermis (the middle layers of the skin), retinol neutralises free radicals, which lead to effect of aging. This helps the skin boost its production of collagen and elastin, giving a plumping and supple effect to the skin.

Retinol increases cell production in the top layer of the skin, giving it a healthy glow, with younger looking cells and smoothed skin. This active ingredient also has a positive effect on the production of collagen, as skin produces retinoic acid throughout this process. This reduces the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, texture, and refines pores for skin that looks plump, smooth, and youthful.

Recently, an alternative to retinol, offering similar skincare benefits, has been making a name for itself within skincare, continuously growing in popularity.

Is Bakuchiol like Retinol?

Bakuchiol is a plant-based active essential for encapsulating the abilities of retinol without the sensitivity. An extract derived from the leaves and seeds of the Babchi plant, has been typically used within Indian and Chinese traditional medicine to heal and soothe sensitive and irritated skin, due to its anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial properties.

Similar to retinol, bakuchiol works intracellularly, triggering cell’s DNA to encourage the production of collagen and target fine lines, wrinkles, and even the skin tone. Bakuchiol is also believed to provide skin UV protection from the sun’s harmful rays.

What does Bakuchiol do for the skin?

In addition to its anti-aging retinoid properties, Bakuchiol has anti-inflammatory and antioxidant abilities- making it an incredible active for sensitive skin. This composition can remove redness from skin, calming irritation and balancing the skins natural PH for an overall reduction in skin concerns such as congestion, oiliness, and dryness or dehydration.

In short, Bakuchiol evens the skin tone, reduces the appearance of fine lines, speeds up the process of cell regeneration, increases collagen, and soothes and heals skin, all while being suitable for use on all skin types.
